ProductionThe animal from which chondroitin sulphate sodium is derived must fulfill the requirements for the health of animals suitable for human consumption.

Characters:Appearance:white or almost white ,hygroscopic powder.

Solubility:freely soluble in water ,practically insoluble in acetone and in ethanol(96 per cent)

Tests:

PH : 5.5to7.5

Specific optical rotation:-20 to-30(terrestrial origin) or -12 to -19(marine origin)

Intrinsic viscosity:0.01m³/kg to 0.15m³/kg

Protein: maximum 3.0 per cent

Chlorides: maximum 0.5 per cent

Heavy metals: maximum 20 ppm

Loss on drying: maximum 12.0 per cent ,determined on 1.000g by drying in an oven at 105 for 4h

microbial contaminationTotal viable aerobic count not more than 10m³ micro-organisms

per gram .It complies with the tests for Staphylococcus aureus,Pseudomonas aeruginosa ,Escherichia coli,Salmonella and Enterobacteria and certain other gram-negative bacteria .
